OUR iNFANT AND TODDLER PROGRAMS

Early Horizons operates a top-rated infant care program. Our original location in Los Altos was the first infant-only center in the Bay Area. While other preschools were adjusting to add infant care, Early Horizons was originally designed around the needs of infants. Our infant program centers around the RIE philosophy, a respectful approach that encourages a child’s authenticity. We accept and support both the child’s dependence and independence. We have a basic trust in the child to be an initiator, an explorer and a self-learner. We create an environment for the child that is physically safe, cognitively challenging, and emotionally nurturing. We provide time for uninterrupted play. At this age our LifeStart curriculum provides freedom to explore and interact with other infants.
Our caregivers encourage the involvement of each baby in the process of their own basic care, so the child is an active participant rather than a passive recipient. We carefully observe each child in order to understand his or her unique needs. We pride ourselves in maintaining consistency and defining certain limits and expectations, ensuring all babies can thrive in a safe place. The warmth and care each baby receives will lead them to become strong, confident toddlers.
Our toddlers are introduced to an age-appropriate environment that encourages children to learn, play and explore. For toddlers this means encouraging a variety of gross motor activities such as balancing, climbing, jumping, and crawling. The LifeStart curriculum we follow at Early Horizons reflects our nurturing caregivers who encourage language development through books, puppets, songs, and stories. We supply blocks, paper, crayons, paint and playdough for those first attempts at creating their very own masterpieces. In our toddler programs we begin to introduce the concept of “circle time” and continuously reinforce positive social skills. Besides an endless assortment of activities that engage their interests and stimulate their minds, our toddlers find laps for sitting and lots of hugs.
The toddlers have a daily schedule that reflects the fact that toddlers need consistency and thrive on routines. While we don't make any child do anything they are not ready for, we do support the structure they require to meet their growing needs.
Teachers keep in touch with parents throughout the day using our private facebook page and a personally tailored daily report, as well as in depth verbal communication at the start and end of each day.
Parents can stay involved in the day's real time activities by downloading the BabyConnect app available free of charge through the iOS or Google Play store.
We encourage our caregivers and parents alike to peruse the following books. To borrow a copy, see the front desk.
“Dear Parent, Caring For Infants with Respect” By Magda Gerber
“The Key to Raising A Self-Confident Baby” By Magda Gerber and Allison Johnson
“Emotional Intelligence” By Daniel Goleman
