Early Horizons specializes in care for the youngest children. Our original location in Los Altos was the first infant-only center in the Bay Area. While other preschools were fitting infants into their program, our entire program was designed just for infants. The infant philosophy of Early Horizons is based on the RIE philosophy. RIE’s respectful approach encourages a child’s authenticity, or genuineness. We accept and support both the child’s dependence and independence. The basic principles of RIE promote a respectful approach to child care. We have a basic trust in the child to be an initiator, an explorer and a self-learner. We create an environment for the child that is physically safe, cognitively challenging and emotionally nurturing. We provide time for uninterrupted play. At this age our LifeStart curriculum provides freedom to explore and interact with other infants.
Caregivers encourage the involvement of the child in all care activities to allow the child to become an active participant rather than a passive recipient. We carefully observe each child in order to understand his or her needs. While you will hear clear voices and singing, there is also consistency and clearly defined limits and expectations. The warmth and caring that each baby receives will lead them to be a strong, confident toddler.
